For too long, it has been expected that women give, serve, and sacrifice—often at the expense of their own well-being. The narrative is shaped by cultural expectations: the mother whose everything is given to her children, the worker who is pushed through exhaustion, and the partner who is always expected to put others first. True wellness for women requires addressing these issues. But in a world where demands never let up, how can we begin to reclaim our own nourishment?

We’re often told to “take care of ourselves,” but that advice can feel hollow when societal expectations, systemic inequities, and invisible labor leave little room to breathe. How do you begin to care for yourself when you feel like your internal world is barely hanging on by a thread? Self-care shouldn’t be another item on a never-ending to-do list and embracing true wellness for women changes this mindset.

Redefining Nourishment

What if nourishment wasn’t about finding extra time or energy you don’t have? Instead, what if it meant redefining care—not as a privilege, but as a necessity? True wellness for women starts with reclaiming your right to be whole.

These feelings aren’t failures—they’re signs the system is asking too much. Let me say that again more clearly- You are not too much, the system is asking too much of you.

Nourishment Isn’t Optional

To nourish yourself isn’t indulgent—it’s a necessity. It’s a radical act of self-respect in a world that often overlooks the needs of women. Nourishment isn’t about carving out hours of solitude or booking a spa day (though if you can, go for it). It’s about the little ways you show up for yourself in the chaos of daily life. Self-care often isn’t the picturesque bubble bath or yoga session we see in the media. As Brianna Wiest writes, “True self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from.” True wellness for women is about making these intentional choices.

It’s the meal you prepare because your body deserves fuel, not because you have time. It’s the extra five minutes you take to breathe before diving into the next task. Even just the simple mindset shift of allowing yourself to be human, not superhuman. It is giving yourself the permission to say no.

True nourishment isn’t perfect—it’s messy, raw, and real. It’s about meeting yourself where you are, even when you feel like you’re running on empty.

Recognizing Structural Barriers

Barriers to nourishment aren’t always personal. Many are structural, cultural, and systemic. The mental load women carry can be a silent weight.   4. Find Small Joys: Relish simple pleasures like a quiet moment, a cup of tea, or shared laughter.

Nourishment as Resistance

In a world that demands everything from you, choosing to nourish yourself is an act of defiance. It’s about reclaiming the parts of you that have been neglected—not so you can do more, but so you can simply be.
